Altamar Gran Canaria – Review

The Altamar is in a great spot overlooking Puerto Rico, so you’ll be able to get some beautiful views of the Atlantic. The apartments you’ll find in the complex are basic but they’re clean enough, and aimed at self-catering travellers. Surprisingly there are full kitchens in the apartments, which is a bonus and considered a rarity here.  In many places you just get one saucepan, 2 mugs, 2 glasses and a couple of spoons, so Altamar means you can cook and eat in without having to shop for basics first.

What’s Nearby

There’s a vibrant shopping centre with bars, restaurants and entertainment venues within 200 metres of the Altamar Hotel so you can walk it easy enough. This of course is fantastic for those late night drinks before you head back to bed.  Further down the hill you have the stunning Amadores beach, which offers local cuisine in beautiful surroundings, although I’d recommend you to get a taxi back up the hill again (it might not seem steep on the way down but, believe me, it is steep going up!)

For the Kids

The entertainment team is on hand throughout the day to keep the little ones amused, and there’s an excellent kids club included in the price. You’ll also find that one of the pools is dedicated to smaller children, making this the ideal choice if you do have kids.

The Best Parts

Travellers on a budget can enjoy the basic but spotless facilities – your base from which to explore the island. There is a restaurant within the complex, so you don’t have to venture too far when you get peckish.

With a total of 3 inviting swimming pools to enjoy and free sun loungers and parasols, you will never feel you have to leave or you’ll not want to anyway. Altamar is relaxing.

Anything Not So Good?

According to some visitors the pool bar closes during certain periods, which can be an inconvenience; however, there are facilities for drinks in the restaurant.  There is also a limited choice when it comes to mealtimes, which can be a problem if you prefer to stay in the complex. You could always book in self-catering though, and make use of your complete kitchen 🙂

On the whole, Altamar Gran Canaria is a nice place to stay and certainly worth considering if you’re planning a cheap, self-catering trip and you just want somewhere simple.
