Which is the Quietest Canary Island?

If you are looking for busy nightlife and disco bars that don’t close until 7am, you might like Playa del Inglés or Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria or Playa de las Americas in Tenerife.

But what about if you want a quiet and relaxing week without too much hustle and bustle? Where in the Canaries has the least tourists?

La Gomera and El Hierro

La Gomera and El Hierro are small Canary islands and you will have to fly to Gran Canaria, Tenerife or Lanzarote first then get a connecting flight or ferry but if it’s peace and quiet you’re after, you might like one of these.

You can fish or scuba dive on these islands or go walking or hiking. If you have tried walking and hiking in Gran Canaria you might like the different scenery on another island.

There might be more things to do in Fuerteventura than in La Gomera, for example, but if it’s peace and quiet you are after, each island offers good weather and nice scenery.

Quiet Places on the Bigger Islands

Don’t overlook the bigger islands either. What about camping in Gran Canaria or Tenerife? I spent a week in Tenerife once in a little village in the mountains where the bar and restaurant closed at 8pm and you could hear nothing but bird song. Canary Islands rural tourism is alive and well because a lot of people want a quiet, relaxing break.

If you want to do this it is best to rent a car and explore the island yourself. Car hire in the Canary islands is inexpensive, especially if you rent a car for more than a couple of days and you can haggle over the price 🙂

It is possible to find a quiet retreat in the Canary islands rather than having to stay in the busy resorts and it can work out cheaper too, especially if you want to camp or stay in a basic retreat.
