February

February is probably our coolest month of the year. You can expect sunny days and cool evenings (bring a light jacket!) Hurricane Delta paid us a visit in 2006 which was an experience, but don’t worry – that was a rare occurrence! February is still warm enough to lie on the beach although the sea breeze can be bracing. If you do get a cloudy day, you can sample the local markets or visit Palmitos Park. Sometimes at this time of year you will see snow on the highest mountain peaks of both Gran Canaria and Tenerife. It is really cool to be able to lie on the beach in the sun here and be able to see snow on Tenerife just a few miles across the water! February is an interesting month to visit because it is carnival time! Every town and village takes part but the best displays are in Las Palmas, Playa del Inglés, San Bartolomé, Telde, Agaete and Agűimes. The carnival starts in February and ends on Ash Wednesday, at the beginning of Lent, but sometimes (especially in the south) it runs on longer. You can take part in Fiesta del Almendro en Flor (Festival of Almond Blossom) when the Canarian almond trees are in bloom. You will see classic folk dancing and you can enjoy sampling local almond produce.
