If you are interested in naturism, you might be interested to know that there are a number of nudist beaches in Gran Canaria.
This is the list of all the ones I can find:
- Playa del Inglés – Maspalomas
- Playa Ambar – Tasarte
- Playa Lomo Galeón – Arguineguín
- Playa Tiritaña – Mogán
- Playa Medio Almud – Arguineguín
- Playa Montaña de Arena – El Oasis
- Playa Taurito – Mogán
- Playa Las Carpinteras – El Oasis
- Playa Veneguera – Mogán
- Playa Los Secos – Tasarte
- Playa del Molinero – Arguineguín
- Playa Las Mujeres – El Oasis
- Playa Las Meloneras – El Oasis
Nudist beaches in Gran Canaria are clearly signposted if they are main beaches and out of the way if not. The main ones are around Maspalomas and you can either begin at the Playa del Ingles end or the Maspalomas end. Walk along the beach and you will see the nudism area signposted (as well as lots of naked people!) Don’t sunbathe nude unless you are between the nudism signs. The nudism area extends from the dunes to the sea.
There are a few very small beaches which are also OK for nudism and Veneguera is one of these. It is a pebble beach just past Mogan and you will need a hire care to get there.
Nudist Hotels and Accommodation in Gran Canaria
There is a naturist complex called Magnolias Natura in Maspalomas and there are twenty eight self catering bungalows around a swimming pool. There is a restaurant and pool bar there and there is also a courtesy bus to and from the nudist dunes area in Maspalomas every day.
The Gloria Palace Hotel in San Agustín has a naturist rooftop and they also operate a courtesy bus to the dunes. The Palm Beach Hotel in Maspalomas and the Sandy Beach Hotel in Playa del Ingles also have naturist areas. If you are a naturist, it might be a nice idea to check out one of these hotels or to base yourself near one of the nudist beaches in the list, then you can go home with an all-over tan

Hi George and Trish
Fishing trips are 60 euros for fishing, 50 for spectating, including lunch and all fishing equipment. I can reserve you a couple places if you like! Palm Beach is really nice, you can get a travel kettle in Argos for about 5 pounds!
Enjoy.

Hi Tracy, it’s easy enough. There are sunbeds and parasols. Just lie on a bed and someone will come around and take your money for it. I don’t use them but I think it’s 3 euros a day for a sunbed and 2 euros for a parasol or something like that.

I thought it was legal to be nude anywhere in Spain – although naturists are usually tolerant of and considerate of the ‘textiles’

There are officially designated nudist beaches in Spain and the Canaries but not all of them. If in doubt it’s best to research the beach in question first. Some families with young children might be offended by nudity and other beaches are naturist-optional. Obviously I’m just talking about beaches and recreation areas. You wouldn’t walk through the middle of Madrid “au naturel” (well I wouldn’t anyway, especially in December when it’s below zero!)

I think you’ll find that simple nudity is legal (though not necessarily desirable) everywhere in Spain:
“In Spain Nudism is another of your Rights. At this time there is freedom of nudism in any public area in Spain and no authorization is required. Beaches, rivers, lakes, open fields, tracks, roads, streets, squares, parks, etc. are public areas in Spain. According to the current legislation, nudism cannot be limited, nor sanctioned and even less so forbidden.” (www.naturismo.org/introe.html)
Its not the children who object – its the parents thinking that they wont be good parents unless they object . (English) parents have a cultural norm that nakedness=naughty (which children haven’t yet learnt), and which other cultures (eg Scandinavian, German, French, Spanish) have got over. It could be argued that covering up is offensive as its said that wearing a bikini can make a woman more attractive than not.
Naturists do tend to like to be where other are, not least to avoid embarrassing the clothed, hence its worth recording where the popular beaches are.
I know its all a lot more complex than that but at least lets cherish the freedom that we have in Spain to wear as much as we feel comfortable in.

Hi Jason,
I was wrong about the legal aspect then. Thanks for the info. It’s interesting to know.
I’m not sure about the English vs European attitudes, in that there are naturists from each of those countries you named. Some English people are very open-minded about nudity and some Europeans are uncomfortable with it, and vice versa. Travelling around Europe, I’ve seen “top shelf” magazines on the bottom shelf and I don’t think that’s right. But then adult magazines present nudity in a sexual way with sexual imagery. Naturism, of course, does not mean sexuality in an adult way; it’s about freedom to choose whether to clothe yourself or not, which the Spanish seem to embrace.
Not everybody wants to see nudity, some people view it as something that should be kept private. Personally I have visited nudist beaches and don’t have a problem with being nude but some people prefer to keep certain parts of the body covered. I was in Dubai last year and that’s interesting again because the norm for many of them is to cover everything apart from the eyes (women only, of course) which seems strange to a westerner.
There will always be people who aren’t comfortable with others’ nudity, either because they equate the nude body with being dirty (which, of course, is wrong) or because they haven’t been raised that way and they find it shocking.
It’s kind of strange then, when you think about it, that many of the people who don’t want their kids seeing nude bodies are the same ones who are happy for their kids to run around naked on the beach for the first few years of their lives.

Good points – yes its funny how we react to nudity (if only showing a tummy in the workplace). It seems to be linked to what we assume the person is trying to do – shock, be provocative, be arrogant, exhibitionist, make a religious point etc (and applies to other non ‘normal’ social activities). Of course the person could be intending to do any of these things – but the only way to find out is to begin to get to know them. We can apply the same logic to people who wear too much according to our perception. I personally thing that ‘naturism’ seems to have the right spirit – encouraging openness, respect and a belief that people (can be) better people without clothes

Fair points. It also depends where you live. If you’re somewhere warm (or it’s the height of summer) it can be pleasant to be without clothes, like a liberated feeling. Else the weather might be the sole limitation.

Hi, Victoria! Do you know of any “naturist villages” on Gran Canaria or on the other islands? I am a freelance journalist and photographer wanting to make a photo story in naturism. I’m going to Las Palmas to see a friend in November, and would like to use a few days to make the story then. I am hoping to interview people who live permanently or part time in the Canarias and enjoying the naturist lifestyle. Hopefully in some kind of nude community. Do you have any ideas for me? That would be wonderful! Thank you so much for any help!

Hi, there is only one as far as I know, Tonje. This is their website: http://www.canariasnatura.com/

Hi,
I’m soon to be arriving in GC and have heard about an amazing beach called gui gui( just up the west coast). From what I read you used to be able to get a water taxi to drop you off instead of having to hike down to it but supposedly this may have stopped. I can’t find any recent info so was wondering if you had heard/know anything about this?
Many thanks for your help.

Thanks Joe
