Actually most years we don’t get any snow and, when we do, it’s just on the top of the mountain. This year it seems a bit more chilly. Whatever happened to global warming?

Currently the days are around 25 degrees C (which is still very pleasant for February) but the nights are a sobering 12 degrees C (and yes, that feels cold if you’re used to central heating!)

Most of us have had enough snow at home to be getting on with but I still find it fascinating that I can lie on Puerto Rico beach or Mogan beach in sunny, mid 20s C heat and look at the snow on top of Mount Teide, Tenerife, across the sea! The weather is forecast to get a bit warmer in March (hooray) but to be honest it isn’t too bad right now. At least we still have sun during the day! ;-)

I remember during my first ever month on the island we had a torrential downpour and the shop underneath the hotel I was in was flooded up to the ceiling! The rain had nowhere to go so a lot of roads were closed as well. The drainage in Gran Canaria isn’t up to much but then it only rains a few times a year so the problem is quite rare. There has been quite a bit of rain in the past couple of weeks but fortunately the weather in Gran Canaria in February is supposed to be better with plenty of warmth and sun 8-) so if you’re coming on holiday to Gran Canaria within the next few weeks you should get good weather!

Actually it might not be the sun and blue skies you had your fingers crossed for!! There is another storm on its way, according to some weather reports. There is a chance of rain today. It looks overcast and there are high winds forecast too. It’s not all doom and gloom though. Some weather websites for Gran Canaria don’t think there will be another storm or even rain. Who knows?

By the way it was 28ºC in the south yesterday and 30ºC in the north so at least it’s warm, even if there is going to be some rain :-D

Right now we have rain, high winds and storms. There were eight metre waves crashing into Puerto Mogan yesterday (the harbour was damaged) and there is water cascading down the mountains. Sardina del Norte was also damaged by the storm and there was some snow in the mountains but it’s melted now.

Tenerife was without power for almost ten hours yesterday too, because of the weather. While this isn’t going to last forever, it’s been one of the rainiest weeks I can remember. It’s also wet in the south of Spain, if that makes you feel better!

The boat trips from Puerto Rico and Mogan are cancelled because of high waves and rough seas. The bars are open, of course, but when the weather is like this, there isn’t really that much to do apart from visit an indoor shopping centre or find a nice bar! I’ll keep you posted on the weather. Hopefully the sun will be back soon :-)

This month has been strange weather-wise. We’ve had rain and strong winds. The wind last Thursday and Friday night was about 60 kmph and there were boat covers, papers and all sorts blowing all over the harbour in Puerto Rico! Needless to say I didn’t sell much fishing that day!

Today is beautiful. :-) Hang on, I’ll just go outside and get a photo…

Not the most exciting photo but at least you can see the blue sky! The weather in Gran Canaria is pretty reliable, for example during May and September you rarely see a cloud, but February is changeable so if you are have booked a holiday in Gran Canaria for later in the month, bring something with sleeves and something with long legs.

Saying that, I can sit at my desk in the harbour wearing a fleece, jeans, boots and still shivering and people walk past me in trunks and bikinis! I guess 20ºC might feel on the cold side to me (well I have been here for 10 years!) but not to everybody :-D Just bring clothes for all seasons and you’ll be fine!
