We’ve been having temperatures over 40ºC in the daytimes (and not much cooler at night).

I’m enjoying the mornings at home sitting in front of the fan but the afternoons sitting in the harbour are rather warm and I might throw myself in and have a swim this afternoon! :-) August is meant to be even hotter!

August is going to be hotter still! It’s been 30ºC in the UK and across Europe this week but today was nearly 40ºC and it’s forecast to be 50ºC by Thursday, when we get a scirrocco (hot winds from the Sahara).

If you’re planning a Grand Canary holiday soon, make sure your apartment has a fan or air conditioning – you’ll need it! :-)

July can have temperatures of up to 38ºC so make sure you bring plenty of sun cream. (It’s cheaper bringing it from home!) As a Gran Canarian resident, I do see ‘lobsters’ walking around in July (and even more in August when there are more people around!) The nights are still hot, about 20ºC or more, and the sun can be very strong. Even in the summer months, there is usually a sea breeze which will cool you down as you bronze yourself by the pool or on the beach.

The annual Theatre and Dance Festival takes place in Cicca, in Las Palmas, through July and August. You can expect Flamenco from Andalusia, Tango from Argentina and all kinds of theatre from dance company shows from Spain and abroad. In mid-July, you can watch the Wave and Freestyle Windsurfing Grand Slam, at Pozo Izquierdo on the east coast. The best windsurfers in the world head to Gran Canaria to take part. You can see windsurfing tricks performed at high speed and at great heights!

Puerto del Carmen is when hundreds of boats take statues of the Virgin Mary out to sea and party the day away! This happens on July 16. If you fancy doing some activities (and cool sea breeze) there are plenty of activities in Puerto Escala to choose from, such as fishing, dolphin trips and speedboat trips.
