The meteorological office are warning about temperatures of up to 34 degrees C later in the week. This is in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura as well as Gran Canaria.

We usually have several siroccos (or calimas) in Gran Canaria every year but when you get two close together it can be a bit much, especially if you have to work somewhere with one humble fan (yes I speak from experience) rather than any air conditioning! :-o The heatwaves can occur at any time during the year but they are less common during the cooler months.

The sun is shining and there’s a really gentle breeze. June is one of my favourite months here because the weather is so perfect. July and August tend to be to hot for me. Well it’s OK if you’re on holiday of course because you can cool off in the sea or in the pool :-) According to the forecast, the hot weather is set to stay so if you’ve booked a holiday in Gran Canaria in the next few weeks you’re in luck because it’s really beautiful right now.

The Atlantic is about 10ºC colder than the Med so you can have a refreshing dip if you get too warm. The sun is up until about 9pm in June so you can eat dinner al fresco and watch the sun set over the ocean. Evenings are warm, about 18ºC, and rain is almost unheard of between June and September. You can enjoy the light evenings with some Canarian Cooking in one of the many restaurants dotted around.

The Las Palmas Opera Festival draws to an end in June, so be quick if you want to watch a show. For other nightlife, you could try the Gran Casino Las Palmas or the Tamarindos Casino in San Agustín. You need to bring a passport for identification and smart dress is recommended.

Cactualdea Park is open every day. This is a tropical garden in San Nicolas de Tolentino, with about 1200 species of cacti on display. Make sure you use a high factor sun cream if you visit the island in June because the sun can be deceptively fierce, especially if it is breezy. Even I get burnt sometimes and I should be used to it by now!
