It’s usually packed here by July but… not this year!
Actually I’ve rarely seen Gran Canaria this quiet in the summer months. It is a combination between rising flight costs and package holiday costs, the appalling exchange rate (you used to be able to get a euro and a half for a pound, now it’s just over a euro) and the package holiday cheap special offers to other resorts.
There are people who come to Gran Canaria every year without fail, despite the cost or exchange rate, becaues they love it here and wouldn’t consider anything else. Then there are the ones who just want to go somewhere hot and don’t really mind whereabouts.
Every July the world’s best windsurfers take to the water for the latest round of the World Windsurfing Pro Tour. The Grand Slam features competitions in race, wave and freestyle winsurfing styles. This competition is at the beginning of July every year and is located in the southwest, between San Bartolomé and Agüimes. The 2008 competition was in Pozo Izquierdo.

Gran Canaria is a great place for scuba diving. The subtropical waters mean that you have a good chance of seeing stingrays, octopus, cuttlefish, bream, angel sharks and many other interesting fish.
Gran Canaria is a great island for sports. There are plenty of routes for walking and hiking in Gran Canaria for those who don’t want to lie on a sunlounger all day long. For beach holidays, it is also a great resort but if you like to scuba dive, swim, run, cycle or play golf, it is also a brilliant place where you can do all that and more.
I tend to stay on the island most of the time. I mean, why wouldn’t I? I live on a hot, sunny island and all my friends and family come and visit me here! However, sometimes I have to fly home (or somewhere else) and that’s when I start trawling through cheap flights websites. Flights to Gran Canaria seem to be rather expensive at the moment. My sister’s just booked for 2 weeks in September and she could’ve gone to Mexico for the same price but… I don’t live there!! For cheap holidays Gran Canaria sometimes works out well but you do have to shop around for good prices.
