This little town used to be part of Galdar but the two are now separate towns, situated about 23 miles from Las Palmas. You can get a bus there. You have to get two buses actually – first go to Las Palmas, then look for a local bus to Santa Maria de Guia.

The Santa Maria de Guia cheese festival is held to celebrate Flower Cheese, or Queso de Flor, as it is called in Spanish. This cheese is really flavorful and used in lots of Canarian cooking recipes. It is made wtih both cow’s milk and sheep’s milk, as well as artichoke flowers which are a bit like thistles. This gives the cheese its unique flavor.
